Cruelty Free Makeup

This New Years I made the decision that I wanted to be a more informed consumer. My goal included being more aware of the products I am buying, where they are coming from, what their ingredients contain, what is the process behind which they come to market, i.e. animal testing and why animal testing was still necessary.

So what does Cruelty Free mean? Cruelty free means that the manufacturing of products does in no way involve experimentation on animals. Simply, companies that are cruelty free do not test on animals.

When I first started researching this process I couldn’t believe everyday products I was using that resulted in animal testing, deodorant, toothpaste, lotions, fragrances, skincare and most influentially makeup. I wanted to understand why these companies were animal testing, were they using such harmful chemicals/ingredients that they had to make sure they wouldn’t harm consumers? Was it required by law? Was it the companies choice? All of these questions I hope to answer for you below and help you to understand my reasoning and also most importantly to educate you as my readers, education is power and the more we know, the more informed decisions we can make regarding the products we are spending our hard earned money on.

One of the most prominent answers I found when it came to animal testing was that Mainland China requires animal testing on all cosmetics and skincare products sold in the country. This means if you are a cosmetic or skincare company and you want to sell to the 1.3 billion people living in the country, you require legal documentation proving you have tested on animals to legitimize the safety of the products. This also means that it comes down to each individual company to decide whether or not they choose to test their products on animals.

This also led me to question the reasoning and justification behind this, how can companies like The Body Shop, Kat Von D Beauty, Tarte and Urban Decay produce extremely high quality makeup and skincare, in my opinion some of the best on the market and be cruelty free? Through resources like Cruelty Free Kitty I found that there are over 7,000 safe ingredients that do not require animal testing because they have already been proven safe to use, which means there are other options, options that are not compromising the quality or safety of the product and do in no way need to harm animals in the process.

Cruelty Free Kitty has been an amazing resource for me in starting this process, her information is logical, precise and well researched and I appreciate forums like this that exist for individuals like me who wish to start this process. The Cruelty Free Shoppers Guide that she provides is an amazing resources for beginners and something that has really come in handy for me! If you are looking at making this change I highly recommend taking a look at this guide to help you navigate products and also suggestions for products you may be struggling to find!

In closing I realize there is so much information out there and it can be very overwhelming to process. I am no where near an expert and I am not trying to preach or convince any of you to make this lifestyle change but it is something i think is really important even if you just become more aware of the products you are buying I feel like I have done my job! I also don’t want to imply that every single product I am buying is 100% cruelty free, I am still in the very beginning and learning stages but I am realllllllly making an effort to avoid products (especially makeup) and not purchase products that result in cruelty to animals. In embarking on this journey it also became very clear to me that we as consumers dictate the market and what is being sold, if we don’t start to educate ourselves and ask these questions we are going to damage our environment and its inhabitants. Even a very small impact, is still intact an impact!

Below I have included a small list of companies that are and are not Cruelty Free as well as Makeup tools that are Cruelty Free. I will also be talking about Cruelty Free Skincare, Haircare and Fashion in the coming weeks so stay tuned!

Thanks so much for reading!

6mths Post Partum

I honestly cannot believe my little baby is 6mths old, I feel like I blinked and here we are!  The past couple months have been amazing, watching our little baby grow and develop into this little man with such a great personality and always huge smile on his face!

Cash is growing like crazy, rolling from side to side and front to back flawlessly and even sitting on his own however his balance from side to side still needs some work! He loves to have conversations especially after he finished his bottle and he absolutely loves his skip hop activity centre, I swear he could enjoy it for hrs if we let him! He’s also taken a much bigger interest in Cali and watches her constantly! He even smiles when she starts to walk towards him and she has also started to be much more interested in him, giving him kisses and joining us in his room for feedings and story readings!

Another big change is we have started solids, I seriously can’t believe I have a baby old enough to eat real food! We started with baby oatmeal (Holle) just after 4mths and he has been doing very well with it so our paediatrician recommended we go ahead with starting foods! As you can tell in the picture below he was really digging the yams!!

One negative over the past few months was that our breastfeeding journey ended sooner than I had hoped. Cash had a reaction to his 4mth immunizations and at that time would not take a bottle or nurse. Since he recovered he would take a bottle but still wouldn’t nurse. I tried going back to a nipple shield, changing my diet but nothing seemed to work and because I wasn’t quite ready to give up hope I continued pumping for another month (serious credit to all the moms who pump full time, it is exhausting and so time consuming) and after a month finally decided it was time to exclusively formula feed. Part of me was devastated because I had hoped after all the hard work establishing my supply/overcoming latching issues early on that we would atleast get to 6mths however part of me was relieved. It is such a difficult journey but in the end I am so proud to have breastfed for as long as I did.

We started sleeping training shortly after 4.5mths and this has been THE biggest game changer. We followed the 3 Day Sleep Solution (which can be found in the files of the Respectful Sleep Training Facebook Group). Cash was napping maximum 30-40mins about 3-4 times a day and he is now napping 1-2.5hrs 4x a day and sleeping through the night with 1 or 2 feeds per night! In a nutshell it is teaching the child to connect their sleep cycles! It has given me time to myself, time to blog, time to relax and also time to nap haha!

Lastly an update on my fitness, I just recently started BBG (Sweat App on Apple Store By Kayla Itsines) I was finding after we started sleep training it was easier to have the flexibility to work out at home or outside so I am really enjoying this app so far. It has a workout schedule you have the option of following, tons of workout sequences and meal planning. I am still walking almost every day on top of my daily workout and am about 10pounds away from my goal weight! The human body is so amazing, I gained almost 35 pounds during my pregnancy and 6mths post partum I am feeling amazing, definitely not at my goal weight yet but my focus is on enjoying my son, watching him grow and fitting in my workouts around his schedule! Moms can be so hard on themselves and I think we all need to remember just how much the women’s body goes through when growing and birthing a child and give ourselves a little credit and time to work out way back to pre pregnancy weight whether thanks in 2mth, 6mths or a yr!

Thanks so much for reading!

29 Years Young

Today I celebrate turning 29 and the last year in my 20’s ahhh!!! I cannot help but feel so unbelievably grateful for this past year, easily the best year of our lives! We found out we were expecting our little man, took trips, spent quality time with family and enjoyed our little family of 3 before we added another set of feet! Cash arrived in January and our lives have forever changed in the most amazing way! Its funny how I now cannot imagine our lives without him!!

I remember talking about being in my late twenties, all the plans and expectations I had for myself in all aspects of my life and although I’m not totally all together (there is still lots I want to do) I am SO glad my life did not turn out the way I expected or anticipated to. I have the most beautiful little family and without the hurtles and humps it wouldn’t have led me to this exact moment sharing my life with the loves of my life Clayton, Cash and Cali<3

I hope you enjoy this little collage of my 28th year<3

My First Mother’s Day

My first mother’s day is tomorrow and I am so excited about it!

Most days I still can’t believe we’ve been blessed with this little miracle,  a spitting image of his dad and an attitude like his mom! I still catch myself being referred to as his mom and relishing in the fact that its real!!

Even through the sleep deprivation and the difficult days, becoming a mom is the most amazing adventure I’ve ever been on. Watching this little being grow and develop has given my life a new purpose and I consider both Clayton and I so blessed to be Cash’s mom and dad.

I also have to note what a gift it has been to watch my mom become a grandma. Our relationship has evolved into such a beautiful connection, I so respect and admire her and what she did for us growing up. I also fully understand the sacrifice both of my parents gave us to make sure we never went without and were always, no matter what, loved and supported! Cash is also so lucky to have his Grandma Pankiw and Grandma Sloan, both so amazing and loving, it truly takes a village and can’t thank all the grandparents enough for their love and support of our little man.

I wish every single mama out there THE best day, I hope your day is filled with love and endless praises because you deserve it<3

Getting Back On The Fitness Train

This mama is jumping back on the fitness train! When Cash turned 3mths I decided it was time to start eating healthy and exercising again. At 3mth I felt like my body had had enough time to heal, that being said the first couple weeks i took it easy as it was a huge transition for my body and mentally as well! When you are dealing with a lack of sleep its easy to sit around in your pjs all day but I am one that goes crazy if I am cooped up inside too long!

During my pregnancy I gained just about 35 pounds. Right after having Cash I was just over 200 pounds which scared me because i had never weighed more than 200 pounds. When I started working out at 3mths I weighed 194 pounds and weighing myself last night I weighed 185!! Progress!! Now I should note I am not a huge advocate of using a scale, I prefer to go more by how I am feeling and listening to my body but its really helped a lot and I’ve noticed a big difference. Ive added two before and afters, first photo is just after when we found out we were pregnant at 8 weeks and the second is me at 38 weeks! The second photo is me at 40 weeks/5 days and me two months post baby.

beforephotos.jpgbefore2.png

One of the first steps I took was just walking, Cash was born at the beginning go January and I remember the week we brought him home the average temperature was -20C (way too cold to take a newborn out haha!) Once it started to warm up to the point that it was ok for us to walk outside for 20-30min we were going! At that point I wasn’t even thinking about myself physically or getting back into shape, for me it was the mental break I needed, the fresh air and getting out of the house kept me sane haha!

This past month we started strollercise and bootcamp at our local recreation centre and man was it a wake up call as to how out of shape I was! Let me tell you my ass was dragging those first few weeks and oh so sore!! These classes run 3 times a week and due to sleep regression and easter so far we have only made it twice a week however starting this week we are committing to 3 times a week now that our little mister is sleeping more consistently! We are also still going on daily walks with little miss Cali who loves her walks haha and Im hoping to eventually end at the park once its nice enough for a little picnic!

One fitness item that I have been looking at and finally committed to buying after being gifted a credit, was a fitbit. A couple years ago I had the fitbit flex (i think thats what it was called, 3 little dots lit up) and to be honest I didn’t use it that much. When I started looking at fitness watches I wanted one that would track my steps, heart rate etc but also a watch that would connect to my phone to allow me to disconnect from my phone and the Fitbit Charge 2 was it for me (I also looked at the apple watch but could not justify the $$) Through the fitbit app you can set goals for yourself, how many steps a day you’d like to reach, track your meals/calories, exercises, water intake, sleep patterns (this has been very interesting as a new mom!) I absolutely love it! You can also set reminderss every hr to move, the fitbit will recognize if you haven’t been active and send you a little vibration to remind you to get moving!

Some of my other fitness necessities are good runners, a House of Koopslie headband, wireless headphones and a great playlist!!

Lastly, diet is probably the biggest challenge and change I’ve made. Ive attached a link to one of my favourite bloggers (here) where she links her three week slim down as well as a fantastic meal plan I have been following! One of my favourite meals to make is a turkey pesto and avocado wrap! Just buy pesto, smooth over the wrap, turkey, peppers, and avocados with a side of carrots and hummus, put in your panini press and
