How To Dress For Family Photo Sessions

Maxine & Shellaine Photography and myself have collaborated to share this useful styling tool to assist in planning for your upcoming photography session.

Photography sessions are an investment, an investment you want to last a lifetime and styling is a huge factor in making your photos come together and withstand the test of time. Below I have listed helpful hints on planning for your session, as well as some retail outlets here in Edmonton as well as online to make your buying experience a positive one.

Coordinate/Don’t Match

Gone are the days of denim and matching white tee shirts. You will want to select a colour scheme and within that colour scheme mix and match your pieces to compliment that scheme.  Stick with classic neutrals that compliment you and your family. Keep in mind less is more.

Textures and Layers

Incorporating different textures and layers into your outfits will add dimension and depth to your photos. Don’t be afraid to add a scarf, knit sweater, fur vest or a wide natural textured belt and don’t forget to accessorize with something to give your photos a personal touch.

Plan In Advance

Keep in mind the location. This is crucial for making sure your theme comes together. A black mini skirt in a outdoor/natural setting doesn’t quite fit, if you see what I’m saying! If you are planning for a scenic nature setting, incorporate warm neutrals, soft browns and maybe a contrasting colour, such as mustard or burgundy as they will balance each other well.

The Season is also very important and will set the stage for the type of outfit you select. If it’s winter, warm neutrals are again a great option, for fall, greens, oranges and mustards are a beautiful combination to the changing season and for summer creams, blushes, whites, greys and soft blues.

Fashion Feet

Lets not forget about the shoes! Shoes are just as important as any other article of clothing and can easily complete and compliment an outfit. Toss the sneakers aside and op for a semi dressy option (i.e. loafers/boots etc)

Clothing To Avoid

There are certain patterns/graphics that really stand out in photos and take the focus away from you and your family. Large logos, patterns, graphics and brand names should be avoided. This will also aid in dating your photos.

VSX Workout Gear & My Favorite Smoothie Recipe!

Ive been wanting to do a workout gear post for a while and am so excited to finally share my favourite workout gear with you as well as my favourite smoothie and infused water recipe! Cali helped me out on this one, as she is one of the reasons I stay active!

I am decked out in Victoria Secret minus my Nike’s, I love love love their workout gear! Their bra’s are the best sports bra’s I have ever owned. I did a previous review here. The support, style and fit in unmatchable!  The Knockout Pants are great for their length, they come in short, regular and long as well as the material, it is the strong and stretchy without being see through! I also love these pants for the large band on the top that helps hold everything in (i.e. my muffin top) and they are currently on sale for $40 online (link below!)! Lastly this tank top, I have it in several different colours and its my go to tank. Its long, stretchy and fits like a glove without being too tight, paired with the knockout bra you will love working out in this gear! The quality of VSX gear is great and it is reasonably priced, so if you are looking for some quality workout pieces I highly recommend checking out VSX!

Victoria Secret may be my preferred brand of workout clothes however I still get a lot of workout gear from Lululemon and also Winners. Lululemon has a sale tab on their website that I check weekly and Winners has a great workout section with tops ranging from $14.99 to $16.99 and bottoms ranging from $29.99 to $39.99 for Nike/Adidas/Rebook gear!

Two of my biggest challenges that I face are drinking enough water daily and eating healthy. We are currently in between homes and I travel quite a bit for work so staying on a consist routine and diet can be difficult. I use my Flavour It 2 Go water bottle every day, my favourite flavour combo is freeze cut lemons, limes, raspberries and mint leaves and I also alternate between my two favourite protein drinks! The first is skim milk and Mutant Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream protein powder with ice , literally tastes like a milk shake and my second is a protein smoothie with apple juice, orange juice, kale, spinach, frozen pineapple, frozen mangoes and vanilla protein (this is a knockoff from Jugo Juice’s Mighty Kale recipe, sooo good!!)

To stay active, I joined Legends Training Centre here in Edmonton and started boxing about 5mths ago! They have 3 classes a week (Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday and are a boxing/bootcamp combo and I try for at least two a week. I have gained a new found respect for boxing and so enjoy going to these classes or my therapy if you will haha! If you live in Edmonton and are looking for an alternate way to stay active outside the gym, I highly, highly recommend Legends. The link to their website is here! In the summers I also love going to the driving range or going for a round of golf, I also play slo pitch in the spring and summer once a week!

Lastly, I want to talk about my fitbit! I love this little thing! Its a constant reminder to stay active, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or get off the couch and take the dog for a walk. I also like the fact that I can track everything on the Fitbit app! If you are looking for better accountability and tracking I highly recommend the Fit bit!

In the end, it comes down to making time for yourself, this is something I have struggled with and continue to struggle with as I am no expert in the field, but we all must make it a priority as we only have one body and one life!

I hope you enjoy! xo

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation Review

I am so excited to be talking and sharing this foundation with you guys!! I have been a long time Tarte Foundation user and after seeing and hearing about this foundation I had to give it a whirl! The verdict… Its amazing!!

I initially purchased this foundation online because Sephora was not carrying it in store until recently but thank god they have it in store now!! I ordered Rattan which is pictured on the left and works great with my self tanner or when I have had a bit of sun. After awhile I ended up grabbing Bone too for my non tanning days. The brilliant thing about having two colours, you can customize your own colour depending on the season and your varying skin tone! I would highly recommend doing this for any foundation you love as our skin is always changing especially throughout the seasons and temperature changes!

For application I always use my damp beauty blender (see my full review on the beauty blender here) to apply, it evenly distributes and pushes the foundation into your skin without lines or the loss of product. If you are going to mix your foundation, mix it prior to my application and then use beauty blender to blend!

My favourite things about this foundation include the coverage, the hydration, the variety and the finish. It looks natural without being heavy or looking caked on, they have 30 different shades so you are sure to find the perfect tone for your skin and it leaves a beautiful matte finish canvas to work with!

If you are in the market for a new foundation I highly, highly recommend the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation!! Link (here)

Hope you enjoy! xo

A Skirt & Sneakers

I am loving all the bright colours for summer and matching it with patterns it a great way to add some fun to your style! Speaking of bright colours, I bought this purse from the Kate Spade outlet in Toronto and am somewhat obsessed haha! It looks great with other bright colours or as a pop to any neutral wardrobe and it was a third of the price, as spending $500 for a bag to me is loco!! I am loving stripes and this skirt is gorgeous dressed up or down and is super stretchy and comfortable! I picked up this elephant tank in Thailand and wear it all the time as soft comfortable tanks are a summer necessity for me! The necklace I purchased from Bib Jewelry for $20 and I love how bright and chunky it is, it goes with everything! Lastly i have converted my comfy flats to converse. I love these shoes. They are comfy and super cute with any outfit! All details with links below!

Hope you enjoy! xo

Wedding Attire

It is that time of year again… Wedding Season!! I will be sharing some tips for dressing as a wedding guest for those beautiful summer weddings!

1. Colours: Never wear white! I think that is pretty well known but hey I will put it in anyways! You never want to outshine the bride however you also don’t want to compromise your own style and finding a medium can be hard! I am loving floral patterns for weddings this year, lavender, blues, corals, and pink are also beautiful/safe colours that will work for any summer wedding!

2. Skin: This should go without saying but please avoid mini skirts or cutout dresses and yes I have seen people wear these to weddings! These outfits are not appropriate attire for a summer wedding, unless maybe you are at the wedding chapel in Vegas, even then meh!

3. Shoes: I am a girl who loves her shoes, especially heels however when it comes to weddings especially a garden/outdoor wedding do yourself a favour and wear flats, or at least pack flats as most lawns do not need additional aeration from your heels! These old navy gladiator sandals are super comfortable and super affordable for under $30.

4. Necessities: I like to bring a small purse with me so I have to narrow down the key necessities I want for the evening. I will always take a pair of sunnies, lipstick/lipgloss, mints and if it is an outside wedding a travel size bottle of sunscreen cus skin cancer does no one any good!

Hope you enjoy! xo
