Save vs Splurge: Mascara Primer

Happy Makeup Monday!

I was first introduced to mascara primer a couple years ago when I tried the Dior Mascara Primer! I loved that it extended the wear and enhanced the mascara itself however the Dior price tag was not for me! Once I was hooked on mascara primer I sought after a primer that was just as great in quality but more affordable, in comes the Tarte Opening Act Mascara Primer. Ive been using this product for the last year and absolutely loving it until I stumbled upon the L’Oreal Voluminous collection, including their Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara (my absolute favourite) and their Voluminous Mascara Primer.

At $7, the Voluminous primer is an absolute steal and the quality is exceptional! In comparison to the Tarte primer I find I get more length, volume and thickness with the Voluminous primer. I believe this difference is because of the bristles of the brush itself. As you can see below the bristles are longer, thicker and wider allowing your lashes an even and thick coat of primer that separates and extends each lash! Unfortunately I was unable to get some good photos comparing but I will share some in the future, with Clayton being away getting even 10 minutes to myself has been difficult!

Overall I would highly recommend you save and invest in the Voluminous Mascara Primer. It will be the best $7 you spend, as many women will attest that good mascara is a game changer, well consider your mascara game changed!!

Hope you have a great week!

Sephora Haul + Holiday First Access

My mom and I visited the Sephora at Kingsway this past weekend to attend their VIB Holiday First Access event! It was a great event with coffee, snacks and tons of new goodies to explore!

Lets see what I walked away with!!

Tarte Pretty Paintbox Collectors Makeup Case $77 (Value $543.00)

This gorgeous kit has you covered on all fronts, 24 stunning limited edition eyeshadows, a waterproof micro liner, Tarteist lash paint mascara, goosy lip paint ANDDD a four piece cheek kit to, accentuate contour and highlight!

Pro’s

This palette literally has everything you need, a one stop shop with beautiful, quality made products. Tarte is one of my favourite brands and with a variety of colours and shades, it offers every skin tone an option for a minimal or full face makeup application!

Con’s

The package is beautiful but not fully travel or wear proof. With the fabric front cover my fear would be it getting dirty very quickly, also with the magnetized closure, there is no way to secure the kit shut so I would definitely not be bringing this with me on any trips.

Verdict

If you are looking for a great kit for the makeup lover, a palette that can be used relentlessly everyday, I would definitely recommend it. When you also consider the value of this palette at $543, for only $77 it is a deal hard to walk away from!

Bite Beauty Set $29 ($64 Value)

This was the first kit I instantly gravitated towards. I have heard great things about the quality and consistency of their Bite products so it was a no brainer and also a great price and kit to try out their products! This kit comes with four shades, varying from nude to plum as seen below and i already love the pigment and feel of these lipsticks.

Pro’s

Great starter kit to try out the products (their lipsticks start at $30 each) so to be able to try four shades for $29 its a great deal!

Con’s

The only negative I would mention is that they are quite small, great for travel but if you fall in love with a shade you’ll definitely need to go ahead and buy the larger size as it won’t last you long!

Verdict

Great product, very reasonable price, a win win!

Last up is the Kat Von D Liquid Lipsticks! These were not included in the holiday access however Ive been eyeing these for a while and wanted to take advantage of the 4X the points until September 19th!

The first one i opted for was the Project Chimps Everlasting Liquid Lipstick. I researched this shade online and it has unbelievably good ratings and now I know why! The colour is absolutely stunning and perfect for fall. I also am so in love with the fact that 20% of the price of every lipstick is donated to Project Chimps, an organization that helps retire biomedical research chimps to a life of freedom. Win, Win, Win!

The second shade is Bow N Arrow, another liquid lipstick that has a great reputation. I am really loving browns this fall and this is the perfectly nude/warm shade!

Verdict

Both are worth the investment as the quality, pigment and longevity of these shades is fantastic!

I hope you guys have enjoyed this Sephora haul and you all have a great week!

Current Drugstore Favourites

I am starting to realize more and more that it is not always necessary to buy high end, expensive beauty products. Brands such as Morphe Brushes, Nyx Cosmetics,  L’Oreal Paris and many others have made buying cosmetics products very reasonable and the quality uncompromised.

These are a few of the drugstore products that I am loving and using all the time!

First up the foundations. I have been rotating between the L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte Foundation (which I have talked about before) and the L’Oreal True Match Foundation for the last 6 weeks and I am in love with them both! I tend to gravitate towards the True Match for a more natural finish and on days when I will be out in the sun as it does have a 17 SPF. I reach for the Infallible foundation when I am looking for a more matte, neutral finish! Both retail around the $15 mark and are awesome examples of not having to spend a lot of money to achieve a beautiful and effective foundation. For the Infallible Foundation I mix the 102 and 103 shades and for the True Match I am W3 (nude beige).

Left: True Match W3 and Right is Infallible 102. You can see the 102 is a bit lighter and cooler so this is why I add a bit of 103 for some warmth!

Next up is this Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil for hydration and revitalization of dry cuticles. I have started using this oil a couple times a week or when my cuticles are noticeable dry and what a difference it has made. Since getting my gel nails off and not having that regular maintenance done every couple weeks this product has been my savour. It smells amazing and also gives my nails a nice sheen as well. It retails for around $8 and a little goes a long way, so it is worth the investment. If you are like me and suffer from dry, yucky cuticles I highly recommend this product!!

You all know I am brow crazed but some days I do not have the energy or time to put on a full brow, this is when I reach for my NYX Tinted Brow Mascara. This product goes on just like mascara on your brows (hence the name) and adds some fullness and colour to otherwise dull brows. It is a super fast application for those days when you are in a rush but still want some brow definition! I use the shade Black-Brown Black. I would highly recommend this product for brow crazies like me who sometimes want a quicker and easier alternative!

Lastly the L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara #335. I have been using this mascara for the last couple months and am in love! This mascara is so black, I love using it for more dramatic looks or with absolutely no makeup to give those eyelashes some pop. I am still loving my Tarte Mascara however it is not waterproof so I am also reaching for the Voluminous mascara for events or days were I know I may be out in the sun. There are several variations of the Voluminous Mascara including not waterproof and various shades of black/brown so I would definitely recommend sticking to the Carbon Black for seriously black eyelashes!

Hope you guys enjoyed this breakdown and have a fabulous week!

Save or Splurge: NYX Genius Illuminating Palette vs Becca Cosmetics Champagne Pop

Two months ago I had never used a highlighter let alone bought one and after watching some videos and doing some research I decided I needed to try out this latest trend.

Highlighting, also known as strobing is used to enhance and accentuate your bone structure as the light reflects the pigment of the highlighter, giving the appearance of a healthy glow. I have come to adore this look especially for the coming summer months!

The key to using highlight and not looking like a hot mess.

  1. A little goes a long way! I only use highlighter on my cheekbones, above the curve of my brows, on my cupids bow and down the bridge of my nose. You can also use highlighter on your collar bones if you are wearing a tank top to help accentuate your bone structure! Going over board on your application will result in a hot mess!
  2. When using a highlighter only use shimmer in your highlighter, use matte powders for the rest of your face Ie blush, bronzer, foundation etc. This will help accentuate and highlight your features as well as help avoid a your whole face reflecting light!
  3. Find a highlighter that compliments your skin tone. If your skin has pink undertones look for a highlighter with those same pink undertones, for olive skin look for yellow/gold undertones etc.

The first highlighter I ever purchased was this NYX Genius Illuminating Palette at Shoppers Drug Mart. For the price it is really unbeatable! $30 for 7 shades!! Highlighters range from $10 (Colourpop) to $50 (Becca Cosmetics), some of you may have heard of Champagne Pop, the collaboration between Jaclyn Hill and Becca Cosmetics?! Yes?! This highlighter is probably one of the most expensive ones on the market at $50, so I wanted to compare the two and see if the price difference was really worth it?!

Compared Side by Side with the NYX (bottom left) and Champagne Pop

(Left: Champagne Pop, Right: NYX Genius Palette bottom left)

The main difference between the two is Champagne pop has more of a peachy gold undertone and the Nyx Pallette shade is a bit more pinkish gold in pigment however both are gorgeous shades and if you have pink undertones in your skin I would recommend the NYX shade. Both have a buttery texture and a little goes a long way in each products case. I really like that champagne pop is the perfect neutral for any skin tone so it gets a little more browny points but in the end both are gorgeous highlighters. If cash flow is tight you are getting a fantastic deal with the Nyx palette (7 for the price of 1) and you are not compromising on quality. If you are a seasoned highlighter I would recommend Champagne pop!

Hope you enjoyed!

Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer

I have used a lot of concealers in my day and finding a great one is critical to any makeup routine in order to hide any dark circles, puffiness or redness!

I decided to try this concealer after several youtubers recommended it and after I finished my Makeup Forever Full Coverage Concealer. I figured I would give it a whirl and if I did not like it I would instantly go back to this concealer (its awesome and I would definitely recommend it as well!!) But now I can’t decide which one I like better, the naked skin might be slightly ahead!!!

The Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer (wow thats a mouth full!!) is easily one of the best concealers I have every used and why I wanted to share it with you guys! The finish is flawless, the consistency is beautiful and it delivers the perfect coverage without looking heavy or caked on! I also love the fact that it brightens to make your eyes pop even more!

It is in the higher price range at $35 however a little goes a long way and with a damp beauty blender you can definitely stretch the amount you use! I have been using this concealer for just over 3 months now everyday and Ive barely scratched the surface!

I hope you guys enjoyed!
